There are so many things we love about being London event planners but one of them has to be the ‘pinch me’ moments. One such moment is the honour of producing events within iconic museums and especially weddings at the Design Museum. We’ve grown up visiting museums on family days out and marvelling at these vast, impressive spaces. To now work within these venues is an honour and a privilege.
We will never get bored of the moment that the doors are shut to the final visitors and the venue becomes ours to transform for the evening. To have an iconic museum to yourself, to create a breathtaking, unforgettable event is really very special. Ordinarily you’re used to visiting for a cultural trip and maybe enjoying a post exhibition coffee. To now be able to create unique and exciting dining experiences, with flowing champagne, canapés and dinner just makes us so excited.
Imagine our delight when not only do we get to work in spaces like this, but we actually become listed planners for them. We are thrilled to announce that we are now officially listed as a preferred planner for weddings at the Design Museum.
THE MUSEUM
The Design Museum moved from its former home in Shad Thames to the very glamorous and leafy Kensington in 2016. The building was built in 1962 for the Commonwealth Institute and was considered one of the most significant pieces of modern architecture in London. It was renovated by John Pawson and reopened as the Design Museum in 2016. To say they went all out when renovating the space would be an understatement. You enter into the atrium and it really is hard not to be wowed at this space. The triple height ceiling feels cathedral like yet the use of wood within the interior structure makes it feel warm and inviting. The angles are oh so amazing. It's impossible not to be in awe of the architecture of the building. Soaring overhead is an impressive sail, perfect for projection. We can't wait to apply a pattern wash, a logo or maybe even a quote.
WEDDINGS AT THE DESIGN MUSEUM
The Design Museum is special in that it has a license so you can marry on site. For this we’d recommend the Helene and Johannes Huth Gallery, it’s the perfect blank canvas space meaning that we can create something totally unique and personal to you. Equally, we’re slightly in love with the idea of your ceremony at the gorgeous Orangery at Holland Park. You’d then wander down through the park and arrive at the museum on foot for your reception.
The space is flexible depending on your numbers, preferred layout and format. We work with each couple to establish what would be best for them. Maybe a reception in the atrium before feasting menus are served on long tables on the mezzanine. Or perhaps it’s an intimate reception on the 1st floor looking down with excitement at the dinner space. We love that there are no music restrictions here so bands, DJs, live music - it’s all allowed. If the exhibition feels right there’s also the option to add that to your wedding. There is something very cool about having a private view of a sold out exhibition.
Whilst the space is a dry hire, don’t let that daunt you. We are experts when it comes to curating the perfect list of suppliers and will seamlessly bring together all the logistics. When you walk into the space, everything will be perfectly set, ready for you to enjoy.
