Biggest mistakes when planning a wedding

Unless you’ve eloped, chances are you will plan your wedding for some time. So much thought goes into that one day or weekend. So many lists, emails and phone calls. As experienced planners who, collectively, have been planning weddings for almost three decades, we’ve written lots about what to consider when planning. We also thought it worth writing about the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a wedding and what to avoid.

ENSURE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER SHOOTS WELL ALL DAY

You’ll have these forever and we therefore urge you to really consider your photographer. Ask them to see a full gallery of a previous wedding as this helps you understand all the shots you’d get. Often on their websites they’ll have their ‘best’ shots. You want to see though that they can shoot consistently throughout the day.

NOT FEEDING PEOPLE

Of course, we imagine you’ll feed your guests but don’t forget to feed your suppliers. Well-fed suppliers work hard and that’s what you need on your big day. It’s the easiest way to keep them happy!

THE WRONG SHOES

The last thing you want is for your shoes to be hurting and for you to kick them off and dance barefoot. Maybe ok if you’re having a beach wedding and you’re dancing on soft white sand, less so elsewhere. Having some great flats, or even personalised Converse as a your flat shoe option is a great idea.

FORGETTING TO TELL EVERYONE WHAT’S HAPPENING

Having a clear structure and having this presented is a great idea. We often find that the reception after the ceremony is an area couple forget to consider. You’re trying to fit a lot into this time – wedding shots, family portraits and catching up with everyone. We highly recommend having more canapés than you think you need here, lots of drinks and a realistic timescale – most people opt for between 1.5-2 hours here.

FORGETTING TO ALLOW FOR A SOUND CHECK

If your band are playing in the same space as your dinner, it’s important to think about when they’ll set up. Having a band sound check during your dinner isn’t the best look and one of the biggest mistakes that can be made when planning a wedding.

FORGETTING TO HIRE A PLANNER

On your day, you want to be focussing on your guests, your new husband or wife and soaking it all in. You really don’t want to be worrying about the small details, where the string quartet are or whether the DJ has arrived. Having a planner means you have a dedicated point of contact to give all suppliers. The perfect planner will condense all the options for you during the planning to ensure t doesn’t feel overwhelming. They’ll then be there on the day, resolve any issues and ensure everything is running perfectly so that you don’t have to think about it at all.
